About Us
Meike grew up in the arts and crafts circuit in
her native Germany, touring the country with her mother’s
fiber art.
Studying art history and creative arts at the university
of Hamburg, Germany, gave her the opportunity to experiment with
many different techniques and media.
She then spent two years in Niger, West Africa,
working with a development program focusing on the local artisans
and marketing their art.
In West Africa is where she met her husband, Hector
Godoy, with whom she now lives in Key West, Florida, working as
a resident artist at the nightly Mallory Square Sunset
Celebration.
Hector has been involved in the creative arts all
his life.
From creating murals at the age of 14 in his hometown
Gilroy, California, to working as a street artist in his current
home Key West, he has worked with all kinds of media including glass,
wood carving, photography as well as doing theater set design for
Teatro Campesino in California.
He has now focused all his efforts on Insect-Art
and carved rocks.
About Our Jewelry
Having been influenced by the tropical and casual
lifestyle of South Florida, Meike is creating what she had always
liked best: not-so-fine jewelry that does not involve any precious
metals. Her pieces are created with the young art patron in mind.
Meike uses glass nuggets, natural stones and beach
glass that she paints – many pieces take several layers of
different sorts of paint to achieve the desired effect of opalescence,
certain shimmers and shines, fluorescence, etc.
She then sculpts a two-part epoxy-resin around the glass or stone
to form each piece’s individual shape and design. Using everyday
small objects (screws, pens, window screens, etc) pressed into the
resin she achieves different surface structures as well as her signature
on the back of each piece – a little Kokopelli figure, the
Hopi Native God of Prosperity.
Once the resin has hardened and dried, she dyes
the piece, then sands and buffs it in order to bring out the texture
of the surface as well as the shine of the glass.
Meike has been showcasing her jewelry in art shows
all over the Eastern part of the United States such as SunFest,
West Palm Beach, FL, Neptune Arts Festival, VA and Westmoreland
Arts and Heritage Festival, PA.
